    US FDA says commercial milk safe despite bird flu virus presence

    The US Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday that it had found bird flu virus particles in some samples of pasteurized milk, but said that commercial milk supply remains safe. The FDA said that because the milk is pasteurized, it remains safe for human consumption as the process kills harmful bacteria and viruses by heating milk to a specific temperature. "Based on available information, pasteurization is likely to inactivate the virus, however the process is not expected to remove the presence of viral particles," the FDA said.

    UPDATE 1-Restaurant operator Alsea posts 34% profit dip, missing expectations

    Mexican restaurant chain operator Alsea reported on Tuesday a 34% fall in its first-quarter net profit, driven mainly by foreign exchange swings and weaker consumption in some of its markets. Alsea, which operates chain restaurants and cafes including Starbucks, Burger King and Domino's Pizza , also reported a 3% rise in quarterly revenue compared to the same period last year to total 18.2 billion pesos. Analysts polled by LSEG had forecast a quarterly net profit of 484.9 million pesos from revenues seen at 18.3 billion pesos.
