Nike and Grateful Dead jam on new trio of psychedelic sneakers

Here's some sneakers that will definitely help you keep on truckin'.

The Grateful Dead and Nike have teamed up for a trio of sneakers emblazoned with the Bay Area band's dancing bear characters and other band iconography.

The Nike SB Dunk Low Grateful Dead sneakers, available in hot shades of yellow, green and orange, also have the band's skull logo inside the shoe along with more bears. Fake fur and suede make the shoes, part of Nike's skateboarder line, stand out, too.

Also built into the tongue: a zippered stash pocket for, well, whatever.

The orange version of the shoes (pictures of which were not released by Nike) will be available July 18 at skate gear site FTC.com. Then on July 24, the yellow shoes ($110) hit Nike's SNKRS site and select skate shops, while the green shoes become available at select skate shops.

Augustus Owsley "Bear" Stanley III, who was nicknamed "Bear," was the Dead's audio engineer, patron and creator of the skull logo – and the inspiration for the dancing bears, Nike noted in its announcement of the new shoes.

His influence is similar to that of Sandy Bodecker, who founded the Nike SB line, and influenced skate culture, says David Lemieux, the band’s archivist and legacy manager.

"As the band’s benefactor, Bear was an incredibly huge part of the Grateful Dead’s ability to become who they were,” he said in a statement in the Nike announcement. "The band wouldn’t become what it is today without Bear’s innovations and contributions. The same fiercely independent spirit from Bodecker helped create that authenticity within the skate community.”
