If You Had Bought Albany International (NYSE:AIN) Stock Five Years Ago, You Could Pocket A 42% Gain Today

It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the Albany International Corp. (NYSE:AIN) share price down 20% in the last month. But the silver lining is the stock is up over five years. Unfortunately its return of 42% is below the market return of 66%. While the long term returns are impressive, we do have some sympathy for those who bought more recently, given the 31% drop, in the last year.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

ANNUNCIO PUBBLICITARIO

During five years of share price growth, Albany International achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 21% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 7.2% average annual increase in the share price. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Albany International the TSR over the last 5 years was 52%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

Albany International shareholders are down 30% for the year (even including dividends) , but the market itself is up 9.7%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 8.7% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Albany International better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Albany International , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
